Why Consider Freelance Writing?

Freelance writing is a very popular choice for people seeking to make a flexible income that includes being able to work from home. Its something that literally anyone can get into, plus it has the added benefit of being able to write about a subject that interests you since so many outlets for making money exist.

So I will show you how to get freelance writing Jobs. Available jobs and not business opportunities please.

In this hub, I will prove many aspects of this very popular freelance forum including:

  • You can find real jobs that do exist in great abundance
  • You dont need to pay for access to directories and job sites
  • You dont have to accept low paying projects from $5 an article (please dont..)
  • You can avoid being scammed by fraudulent employers
• You can find real jobs not just 50/50 revenue sharing options (though these are good and will serve another hub as you can work from home in freelance writing doing this)

I wont be covering revenue sharing schemes here as this hub is about how to get freelance writing jobs and not revenue sharing options.

A good start is to decide which writing venture interests you more - technical writing, copy writing, proof reading, copy editing, SEO writing, academic writing...

If you are a programmer or a IT software user, perhaps technical writing would suit your freelance writing objectives.

Freelance academic writing suits those who have written dissertations, possess a degree and understand citation rules such as Harvard.

For starting freelance writers with no experience, article writing is the best starting point as so many projects exist. So many companies need content for their sites and blogs and literature. This area alone can be a fulltime job.

To sum up the writing

You can follow my live feeds on twitter http://twitter.com/seowritersuk which include jobs from various freelance job sources.

Where do I find these jobs - i seem to find only expensive eBooks on the subject promising the Earth?!

First, there are many opportunities to work from home in freelance writing jobs available right now. You will find jobs through knowing how to locate and pin down the correct writing role that suits you. That is what I will show you here. There are lists of FREE and low monthly payment (around $5 to $7 a month) options all over the web and I have spent a great deal of time researching in order to know how to get freelance writing jobs.

It is competitive like any market. You will need to brush up your resume if you have not already created one that targets freelance jobs. Employ the services of a professional CV writer if this is not your area. Your resume needs to target the freelance work you have done and your specific skills of use to employers. If you have no freelance writing experience - don't panic - simply list what you have done including your last few jobs highlighting relevant facts e.g. did you write a web page, a pdf, or a document of some kind that was of value to the company.

Start uploading articles on your favourite subject areas if you have no published material. Some good FREE sites that also include the ability to post video and images are:

Ezine Articles
GoArticles
Searchwarp
Bukisa
Xomba
Dropjack
Triond

I write articles daily, as well as web site content, and newsletters. I am always able to find work, and have built a trusted client list from whom I receive constant requests for more quality content. You will acheive this too from knowing how to get freelance writing Jobs.

Its been repeated everywhere that content is king! The best opportunties for those whom wish to work from home in freelance writing jobs go to the writers whom understand this very well. This is because from content comes knowledge, and knowledge is power; here on this hub i list a number of sites where you will find freelance writing jobs requiring a varying level of skill and experience from total novice to experienced copywriters.

Did you know you can make money daily from blogging? I am not talking about affiliate marketing - I will cover that in another hub - I refer to actual jobs where you are paid to be a blogger!

Do you currently rely on bidding sites to find work? That can come to an end. Dont battle to be the lowest bidder when you can barter a better deal with employers whom will pay a decent salary.

One thing on my lists below, dont let your location become a barrier - these sites list telecommuting jobs and therefore your skills and experience will be placed above what planet you come from! Jobs in the UK, you live in the US - still apply unless it says otherwise; likewise for UK residents applying for US listed jobs.

WARNING - SCAM ALERT!

Here, each month, i will update this text box with scams out there claiming to bring real freelance jobs to your door though actually just charge a fee for information that you can find for FREE simply by using my list of sites right here.

Others have wasted my money and left me feeling duped into believing the promises of yet another scam merchant's site.

ONE TIP: You can check reviews on the SEs by typing the name of the biz site followed by the word review, for example: Academia-Research.com review

LATEST WARNINGS

This was in the FREE jobs section but i am finding evidence of a lack of credibility, and this is being investigated. I would appreciate any feedback from people whom have used them. Another called Ivory Research seems to be a much better choice for academic writers, i will be adding it when I have digested some research.

Verdict: More bad comments than good, and feedback from the company has me suspecting they use several domains. Ummm.....best avoid in my opinion.

Legitmate Online Jobs - http://www.legitimateonlinejobs.com/virtual-call-center-jobs-employment.htm

TOP JOB SEARCHING TIP

When searching for writing jobs on Google or Yahoo, try using within quotation marks -

1. "write for us" - as this will target sites where editors are requesting new writer applications. This will yield a fast list of good results and you can spend some time filtering to the ones that interest you.

2. "we pay $XXX per article" can bring up very targeted lists, replace XXX with 50, 100, or whatever rate you are seeking.

A great list.

Freelance writing takes so many guises!

stephen crowley 3 years ago

thank you, its a good list, and i have more to add. i have managed to maintain a steady income from these sites. its really a numbers game, and it helps if you can show that you write professionally and with accuracy. The pay varies, many low around $10 to $15 an article, also a wide variety in the $50 plus range. Though, when you consider these tend to be blogs and short articles of around 400 words, its clear how much you can churn out in a day.

I also recommend speculative applications to web sites asking if they need writers. SEO companies need writers to help draft copy for their clients - thats a good start.

Tips to find jobs at freelance sites 2 years ago

You can find writing jobs at freelance sites. If you are a beginner you will face sevaral problems.

Difficult to find jobs

Try to communicate with your client efficieently

Yes, good advice. But experience and skills can make a real difference. If you are a beginner with skills in design, programming or you have a technology background, you can hit the higher rates very quickly. Beginners whom struggle tend to be those whom have 1. not defined their skillsets or 2. not published any articles yet.

Hi Shirley. That is not for this hub as its a revenue sharing option and not a place to find work. There are lists of sites and many better than this one you mentioned. I do have a hub planned for that, examples are ehow, mylot, lifetips, also there are numerous 50/50 options - these all work using one method only, lots of relevant traffic.

Gareth 2 years ago

Superb hub. I hated searching the net for this information as there's so much of it.

After reading through I decided to write about a topic I know really well, and have now created my own site.

Thanks Mr Crowley keep this great stuff coming.

is wordsofworth.co.uk a legitimate freelance writing comapny?

Stephen Crowley 2 years ago

hmmm.. it seems they pay up to 240 pounds with projects spanning up to 80 articles. If thats possible and you can do that, thats £3 an article... not so sure its worthwhile when so many more lucrative opportunities exist in the lists on my hub here. I certainly wont go to £3 an article, and i dont like the idea of anyone else doing it unless its a quick blog post or a tweet.

Stephen Crowley profile image

to smartyoungster on Indian Writers: More and more jobs specify the need for high quality writing styles, perfect grammar, the ability to adopt new styles like AP or Chicago, and also the ability to fact find and know the difference between credible facts and useless information (citing sources to prove the info stands).

If you can do that, it does not matter what country you are from.

Freelance writers are probably the secret money making machines that we have right now. We do not talk about them very often in terms of an earning cache but I think they are one of the most powerful movers in the web industry.

Nancy R. Gipe 23 months ago

There is an abundance of opportunities in freelance writing, however, there's ONLY a select few that you can earn good money since most of the time newbies (especially from foreign countries) would resort to low-balling the cost per article and it has greatly affected not only the freelance writing industry but the freelancing industry as a whole.

Thanks for the share!

Colin Hall 23 months ago

Hi Stephen, Thanks for the excellent list of sites and for the warnings, all very useful. It's nice finding a hub where the author replies. The net is full of scams, but I'm assuming that there must be light at the end of the tunnel.

In your opinion, do you think it is better to specialise or just write about anything and learn as you go along. My main subjects are in art and wine (maybe that's why I always sick and depressed ;-) no jokes please), both subjects are swamped with online writers.

Many thanks

Colin :-)

Stephen Crowley profile image

Stephen Crowley Hub Author 23 months ago

hi Colin. If starting out, be prepared to write on any subject though focus on an area that is your specialism. Eventually, your writing experience will lead to the more specialised roles as you can demonstrate more and more published articles. Try and cross sell yourself into various areas of writing such as SEO content, copywriting and press releases too as this builds your profile and credibility as an online writer. All the time, keep an eye on opportunities that target your skills e.g. if you have a recognised qualification in Law, look for law writer roles on places like indeed.com. So, for you, look for wine writing jobs as you are doing. Most areas are swamped with writers, fact of the industry that will only become more competitive. Stand out by having your own web site, command the niche with site content on wines (etc), and quality advice - is there a niche within 'wine info sites' that is not being targeted like an obscure brand or a dedicated resource on a particular supplier. On job sites, Scams are those where fees are asked before you see the jobs. If fee sites do show the jobs partially or wholly, though you cant apply till you pay, those are generally fine like freelanceswitch.com and flexjobs.com.

For many people idea of working for yourself, usually at home, is very appealing. The lack of structure, everyday contact with colleagues and stable salary make the prospect of working as freelancer very daunting experience. As with all career choices and new ventures, freelancing has series of positive and negative aspects, all of which need to be considered when contemplating commencing freelance work. You have opportunity to write in variety of different genres, and cover vast subject-matter area. Not only does this keep work interesting, it allows you to develop range yourlance of writing skills.
